How does ESHYFT calculate overtime pay?

If you work over 40 hours in a week*, as an ESHYFT nurse, then you would earn overtime. Following the U.S. Department of Labor's guidelines, ESHYFT follows blended overtime rules because, occasionally, ESHYFT nurses work at two or more different rates in a single pay period. This means the overtime premium must be paid out at a blended rate.

Blended rates are found by dividing the total base pay for the week by the total hours worked that week. To calculate the overtime pay rate, use the blended rate on the additional .5, and add it to the base pay rate of that particular shift.

For example:

Blended Rate

A nurse works 5 shifts with different rates as shown in the below table. The total base wages for the week are $1,232. The total hours are 48. If you divide $1,232 by 48 you get $25.67 for the blended rate.

Overtime Rate

For the 8 hours of overtime on Friday, what is the rate that we will be using? You take the base pay rate on Friday of $26 plus the additional overtime premium (blended rate of $25.67 x .50 = $12.84 ) so the total overtime pay rate for Friday would be $38.84.

If holiday and overtime overlap see below for calculation:

Overtime Premium Rate - As shown above using the blended rate.

Holiday Premium Rate - Is .50 of the holiday base pay rate.

Add the two premium rates together and then add to the base pay rate for that shift.

*Overtime is applied to the last confirmed shift in a pay period.
